Malverne Schools Hosts Parent Academy

On Jan. 9, the Malverne School District hosted a parent academy titled “Breaking Through the Cloud of Common Core to Be College and Career Ready.” Approximately 100 parents and guardians within the district attended the event, which was geared for all students in grades K-12. 

Hosted by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Rose Linda Ricca, High School Principal Dr. Vincent Romano, middle school assistant principal Daniel Nehlson and special education teacher Rachel Gross, topics included: K-12 Common Core ELA and math, assessments, parent portal, learning standards, the K-12 districtwide SAT initiative, AP classes and college applications.

“Our first districtwide K–12 Parent Academy was a huge success,” Mrs. Ricca said. “The common core standards require collaboration from school, parents and the community. This academy was just the beginning of our community’s Common Core conversation, which leads to College and Career readiness.”

Participants received firsthand training on how to do the “new math” and were given reading assignments. Parents and guardians received clarity on confusing topics and had the opportunity to ask specific questions. 

Everyone left with a “parent backpack” that included information on the Common Core and how to help their children achieve using the new standards. All information from the evening is available through a quick link under “announcements” on the district’s website, www.malverne.k12.ny.us.
