Merrick Boat Explosion Injures Man

The victim was sailing in Sea Dog Creek before the explosion Sunday, cops said.

A man is recovering after his boat exploded in Merrick Sunday evening, according to Nassau County Police.

The victim, 43, was sailing through Sea Dog Creek when he began having engine trouble, police said. He brought the boat to 3340 Hewlett Ave. in Merrick, where he tried to repair the engine, cops said.

At 5:20 p.m., the boat exploded and hit the man, who suffered minor burns to his face, arms, and legs, officials said. He was hospitalized for treatment of his injuries, authorities said.

Merrick Fire Department tackled the blaze and extinguished it, cops said.
