School District Budget Vote; Increase Of $2.2 Million

West Hempstead Union Free School District budget includes a 1.5 tax levy increase.

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — Residents of the West Hempstead Union Free School District are deciding on the 2022-2023 budget.

The budget, being voted on June 21, stands at $71,392,000, an increase of $2.2 million from the previous year.

It's a 3.2 percent increase.

The adopted budget is reduced by $256,000 which comes from, in part, administration retirees.

The proposed tax levy for homeowners is a 1.5 percent increase, although the district said that is still below the district's tax cap.

If the budget fails, the district must adopt a contingency budget with the tax levy increase automatically at zero.

Of the $71.3 million budget, $56 million would go toward school programs.
