ELMONT, NY — One of the badly impacted areas in the Friday flooding was in Elmont.

Eleven senior residents remained displaced from their Foster Meadow Lane co-op. They spent Sunday at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, using green cots in the school gymnasium. Food was provided by the American Red Cross, Newsday reported.

All residents that live in the nearby Westover Gardens, operated by the Town of Hempstead Housing Authority, have been returned since 3 p.m. Saturday, a town spokesperson said.

At the height of the heavy rain on Friday afternoon, Nassau police observed several feet of water in the basements of multiple apartment buildings. Police and Elmont Fire Department evacuated in excess of 200 residents as a precaution. PSEG Long Island cut all power to the Elmont Senior Center Complex on Elmont Road.

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages (D-Elmont) told Newsday that the complex is prone to flooding.

"The evacuation of up to 200 people in that area is a traumatic event. And it's a reoccurring event for some of these individuals."
