Massapequa Schools Reopening Plan: What You Need To Know
The school district released it's plan to reopen schools next month. Here are some of the key points.
MASSAPEQUA, NY — Late Friday, the Massapequa School District unveiled its plans for reopening schools in the fall in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
The plan includes many facets the district believes will help keep students and staff safe, as well as promote learning for the students. The plan has been submitted to the state for approval.
The district developed plans for entire in-person learning, a hybrid of in-person and distance learning, and entirely distance learning. Many of the plans share similarities when it comes to social distancing and other health measures.

Here are some key facts about the district's plan:
- There will be daily temperature checks for all students and staff. Anyone with a fever will be isolated. Staff will have to go home, and students will be kept in an isolated area while waiting for parents to pick them up.
- Students will have to wear face coverings at all times during the day. If they do not have them, the district will provide face coverings.
- Everyone who takes the bus — students, drivers and aides — will have to wear masks at all times on the bus.
- Classrooms will have plastic barriers between desks.
- Elementary students will eat their lunch in their classroom. Teachers will take lunch orders and send them to the cafeteria. The food will be prepared, individually wrapped and delivered to the classrooms. Secondary students will eat in cafeterias as normal. They will be able to place lunch orders in advance online and quickly pick them up during their lunch period.
- Under the hybrid plan, all elementary students will attend classes every day. Special classes will be held in the homeroom, if possible, or in separate locations that follow CDC guidelines. Students will have outdoor recess on the field.
- Under the hybrid plan, secondary students in grades 6 and 9 will have class every day. Students in grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 will have classes ever other day, alternating with distance learning.
