MASSAPEQUA, NY — Massapequa student Ryan Hirschhorn, a sixth grader at Berner Middle School, is having his art displayed at the Long Island Children's Museum.

Ryan's art, called "Hearts for Ukraine," is on display at the museum's Community Gallery. It will be on display throughout the month.

The art piece, which was created to support the people of Ukraine after the country was invaded by Russia last year, was born out of a fourth-grade Valentine's Day project he did. That project involved making hearts out of paper.

Ryan worked with his father to make hearts out of metal, which were painted yellow and blue for the colors in the Ukrainian flag.

It was first displayed at fundraiser hosted by Project C.U.R.E., which has launched the Caring for Ukraine campaign for medical equipment and supplies. After that fundraiser, Ryan got in contact with his former principal at Birch Lane Elementary School, Steve Aspetti, about displaying it in the school's lobby.

After the school year, the piece will be taken the Ukraine House in Washington, D.C. to be displayed.

You can see more about Ryan's work, which has grown into a three-sculpture series, at his website. It also includes pictures of the building process and more details about the sculptures.
