Morning Fire Disrupts Berner Middle School

Students delayed in morning blaze.

A morning fire caused delays, but no major harm at Berner Middle School, officials said.

The fire broke out in the school kitchen  at 7:30 a.m. and was quickly put out by staff, according to Massapequa fire chief Stephen Daresta. Nobody was hurt.

There were no students inside at the time, since the blaze broke out before school hours, but students were held outside the building under school supervision until the fire department gave clearance, according to a letter to parents from principal Jason Esposito.

The students were held for about 15 minutes, Espisito said. "We adjusted our period schedule slightly and presently we are in the midst of a “regular” school day at Berner," Esposito wrote.

THe school kitchen had been given a go ahead to resume activities by the Nassau County Board of Health, officials said. It wasn't immediately known if lunchtime proceeded as normal.
