Oyster Bay Holding 9/11 Memorial Tonight
The town will honor those who were killed 21 years ago, as well as people who have died since from 9/11-related illnesses.
MASSAPEQUA, NY — The Town of Oyster Bay will be holding its annual Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony tonight, honoring the lives that were lost 21 years ago, as well as those who have died from illnesses since. The town says the ceremony is the largest of its kind on Long Island.
The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. on the bay side of TOBAY Beach, located on Ocean Parkway in Massapequa.
A 9/11 Light Tribute will illuminate the skies along the shoreline in memory of those lost in the attacks. The town will also unveil the newly inscribed names on the Wall of Honor of those who died from 9/11-related illnesses caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The ceremony includes bagpipe music, a reading of the names of victims, and remarks by family members and loved ones of the victims.

"This year marks the 21st anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor those we have lost we invite all residents to join us at our annual Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony. This remembrance ceremony features music, religious readings, a light tribute and a reading of the names inscribed on the town's 9/11 wall," said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. "We will also unveil new names inscribed on the town's 'Walls of Honor,' recognizing those who gave the ultimate sacrifice due to 9/11-related illness."
The town's 9/11 Memorial — featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center — is inscribed with the names of residents lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who died from illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.
