Baby Delivered In Long Island Starbucks Parking Lot

The parents realized they would be unable to make it to the hospital in time.

A Long Island couple, Casey and Matt Dobler, delivered their baby in a Starbucks parking lot in Manorville with the help of an emergency services dispatcher Wednesday night.

The couple pulled into the parking lot on the side of County Route 111 when they realized they wouldn't have enough time to get to the hospital as planned, according to Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.

The mother was already in labor, and the father called 911.

Bellport's Marlo Van Houten was the dispatcher on call, and she provided the couple assistance with the birth over the phone. She has been an employee of the county for 10 years. She talked the father through the delivery, instructing him to ensure the baby was breathing, to tie off the umbilical cord and to keep the newborn warm.

“Once again, our emergency services personnel were able to quickly come to the aid of a family in need,” Steve Bellone, Suffolk County executive, said in a statement. “I commend Dispatcher Van Houten for her calm and professional approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of this family.”

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and offered assistance shortly after the baby was born. The baby and mother were transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson.

The baby was named Sailor Jewel Dobler, Matt Dobler announced in a Facebook post.

"Well.. I have been through some crazy things in life," he wrote. "But I have to say delivering our baby in a Starbucks parking lot tops anything I've ever done."
