1 Dead, 2 In Critical Condition In Sullivan County Drownings

The family that lived in Nassau County were swimming in White Lake Sunday.

BETHEL, NY — One person is dead and two are in critical condition after a report of multiple drownings in Sullivan County Sunday.

The New York State Police said troopers from the Liberty barracks responded around 2:15 p.m. Sunday to White Lake in the town of Bethel for a report of drownings.

The preliminary investigation found that a family from Bellerose, Nassau County, began swimming in the lake around 10 a.m. Sunday.

Around 2 p.m., police said, Basir Amin, 18, began to struggle in the deep portion of the lake, and his sister, Nasrin Amin, 21, and uncle, Afrid Haider, 34, tried to help him.

Authorities said all three went under the water and did not resurface.

They were recovered by responding divers from Bethel Fire Department and had been under the surface for a period of time.

Lifesaving measures were begun immediately, and all three were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills.

Basir Amin was pronounced dead, police said. His sister and uncle are both in critical condition, police said.
