19-Year-Old Dies When Car Turns Over In Pond

Police said her vehicle went off the roadway and ended up in the small pond.

GARDINER, NY — A 19-year-old woman was killed when her car went off the road and ended up overturned in a pond.

The New York State Police said the accident happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday on Sand Hill Road in the town of Gardiner.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation found that Hailee Witherel, 19, had been driving a gray Nissan Sentra north on Sand Hill Road when it left the roadway.

The car went into a small pond and overturned, police said, and Witherel was unable to get out of the vehicle, police said.

She was taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where she was pronounced dead.

State police said the accident is still under investigation. Anyone who may have been traveling on Sand Hill Road at that time is asked to call the SP Highland barracks at 845-691-2922.
