HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Another set of severe storms on Sunday — including one that killed a woman at a campsite in the Catskills — brought flash flooding and downed wires to the region, and left thousands without power.

As of Monday morning, less than 5,000 customers of the utilities in the region were still out:

  • Dutchess County: 4,499 Central Hudson customers
  • Putnam: 10 Cen Hud customers
  • Ulster: 113 Cen Hud customers
  • Orange: 150 O&R customers
  • Rockland: 1 O&R customer

One of the waves of thunderstorms sent 90-mph winds across two campsites on the border of Delaware and Sullivan counties Sunday morning. The National Weather Service said the microburst affected two campgrounds, with many recreational vehicles and camper units, a few tents, and at least two vehicles heavily damaged and in some cases destroyed by falling trees. Some of the trees or large branches exceeded a foot in diameter.

"A woman unfortunately perished when a large tree snapped and fell on her site, crushing it. At least one other person was injured with a hit to the head. There was an unknown number of additional though minor injuries," the NWS said. "Eyewitnesses reported that the winds came up
suddenly and then lasted at least 5 minutes with one tree after another falling during that period."

The cause of a fatal small plane crash at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Catskills is unknown.

It crashed in Delaware County after taking off from Albert S. Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta with five people on board, the Federal Aviation Administration said. There were no survivors, according to the Aviation Safety Network, which said the plane's automatic surveillance data, which broadcasts information about an aircraft's GPS location, altitude, ground speed and other data to ground stations and other aircraft, showed that the airplane was climbing at an altitude 9,000 feet when it entered a rapid descent and data was lost. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The next expectation of storms is Friday.
