Arrest Made In Crash That Destroyed Historic Barn In Hudson Valley

Authorities said a car driving by someone who was intoxicated crashed into the 1865 building, causing a massive fire.

HUGHSONVILLE, NY — More details were released about the crash and fire that led to the destruction of a historic barn in the town of Wappinger Thursday.

The New York State Police said troopers heard what sounded like a car crash around 3:30 a.m. on Middlebush Road in the hamlet of Hughsonville.

When they drove Route 9D and Marlorville Road, they found a 2007 Honda Odyssey had crashed into a barn and a fire erupted.

Troopers said they tried to put out the flames but quickly began efforts to get the unresponsive driver of the Honda to safety.

Authorities said the driver, a 17-year-old, was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The 17-year-old was later arrested for driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

No other information about the driver was provided. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

The Red Barn, which dates to 1865, is one of the oldest historic buildings in the town of Wappinger. The building is on Route 9D, opposite Marlorville Road. The barn had recently been renovated.

Power had to be cut in the area so Central Hudson could install a temporary utility pole.

Police said Route 9D had to be closed for about 12 hours for fire department activity and utility work. The building and nearby utility pole were completely razed.
