Elderly Woman Killed In Wrong-Way Crash In Poughkeepsie: Police

The early Wednesday accident remains under investigation, according to police.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A 77-year-old woman died after a wrong-way crash on Route 9 early Wednesday, police said.

The accident happened around 5:20 a.m. on Route 9 North in the vicinity of Fox Street.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle entered Route 9 North from the Columbia Street ramp going in the wrong direction, or southbound in the northbound lanes, according to police.

The vehicle then collided head-on with a northbound vehicle, police said.

Police did not yet identify the 77-year-old victim, an Orange County resident. The woman had been a passenger in the wrong-way vehicle, according to police.

She was rushed by an Empress EMS Ambulance to Vassar Brothers Medical Center, where she died, police said.

Route 9 North was closed until around 11 a.m. Wednesday as police investigated the crash.

“At this time, there is no indication that alcohol or drug impairment contributed to the incident,” police said, in a news release. “The crash appears to be a tragic accident; however, the investigation remains ongoing.”
