Hudson Valley Man Gets Longer Sentence After Trying To Call Rape Victim

The district attorney's office said it proved the man violated his plea agreement by attempting to contact his victim who was a child.

GOSHEN, NY — A Goshen man was told how long he would be spending in prison after pleading guilty to raping a child.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Friday that Jesus Torres, 33, of Goshen, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 20 years of post-release supervision in connection to his previous guilty plea to first-degree rape.

As part of the sentence, he will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act.

At the time he pleaded guilty, Hoovler said, it was anticipated that Torres would face up to 15 years in prison, but law enforcement uncovered evidence that he had attempted to contact the victim of his crimes after the plea.

The DA’s office said it proved at a hearing that Torres was in violation of his plea agreement with the court and sought the enhanced sentence that was ultimately imposed.

In his plea, Torres admitted that, being 18 years or older, he engaged in sexual intercourse with another person who was less than 13 years old.

Hoovler said Torres’s conduct was appropriately met with a lengthy prison sentence.

“My office worked to ensure that the defendant’s efforts to re-victimize the survivor in this case were punished with an enhanced sentence,” he said. “I commend the survivor for coming forward and being heard despite being forced to live every day with the consequences of these barbaric acts.”
