Guilty Plea Entered In Montgomery Untraceable Weapon Case: DA

A loaded, defaced weapon was recovered during a 2024 traffic stop, according to the district attorney's office.

MONTGOMERY, NY — A Walden resident has pleaded guilty to a weapon charge for having a loaded and defaced 9mm pistol in his vehicle.

Darryn Deans, 29, entered the plea on June 10 in Orange County Court to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors will recommend Deans be sentenced to five years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, according to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.

Deans’ sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3.

State police pulled Deans’ vehicle over on Aug. 1, 2024 in Montgomery.

Troopers smelled burnt marijuana and determined Deans was impaired, prosecutors said. Police also discovered the loaded and defaced 9mm pistol in the vehicle’s trunk. Deans admitted it was his weapon, according to the district attorney’s office.

“Untraceable firearms in the hands of those criminals unlicensed to possess a gun are a recipe for disaster,” Hoovler said.
