Historic Barn Destroyed By Car Crash, Fire In Hudson Valley

The structure, which had recently been renovated, dates back to 1865 in the hamlet of Hughsonville in the town of Wappinger.

HUGHSONVILLE, NY — One of the oldest historic buildings in the town of Wappinger was destroyed by a car crash and fire early Thursday morning.

The Red Barn, which is across from Marlorville Road in the hamlet of Hughsonville and dates back to 1865, had to be demolished after a driver crashed into the building, causing a fire that spread rapidly through the entire structure, according to a Facebook post by the Town of Wappinger.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

The driver was rescued and reportedly survived the crash.

As of 7 a.m., fire departments including from Hughsonville, New Hackensack and Fishkill were soaking the remaining embers of the fire.

A temporary utility pole was installed by Central Hudson to support the broken one. Power had to be cut off for the installation. The estimated time for restoration is 11:30 a.m., according to the power company.

According to the state Department of Transportation, both lanes of Route 9D are blocked in both directions between Old Hopewell and Middlebush roads due to fire department activity.
