Knife-Wielding Man Shot Dead After He Pulls Fire Alarm In ER, Attacks Security Guard: Police

The deadly incident took place late Thursday night in the Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital ER lobby, City of Newburgh police said.

CITY OF NEWBURGH, NY — A man is dead, and a woman is injured after a violent incident at a Hudson Valley hospital.

The City of Newburgh Police Department says that on Thursday night, around 11:07 p.m., officers responded to the Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital emergency room lobby after receiving a report of a shot fired.

Police say that before they received the report, the City of Newburgh Fire Department had already been dispatched to St. Luke's after a disorderly man pulled the fire alarm box in the emergency room lobby.

After St. Luke's security staff confronted the man who pulled the alarm, he then pulled out a knife and attacked a security guard, according to initial reports from authorities.

Police say that a security guard then fired a single round, which incapacitated the attacker, identified as 45-year-old Carlos Ortiz, of the City of Newburgh. The wounded man was later pronounced dead.

A woman who was near the altercation was also injured with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury, according to police.

City of Newbugh police say that there are no charges at this time, and that the incident is being investigated by the City of Newburgh Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force.
