LI Man Dies In Labor Day Weekend Drowning

Police said he began swimming in the Delaware River but became tired.

HIGHLAND, NY — A Long Island man died over the Labor Day weekend while swimming in the Delaware River.

The New York State Police said, around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, troopers were sent to the Landers Minisink Campground in the town of Highland for a report of a possible drowning.

A preliminary investigation by law enforcement found that Ricardo Ismalej Xujar, 47, of Flanders, Suffolk County, was at the campground with family and friends for the holiday weekend.

Police said he got in the river around 1:30 p.m. and tried to swim across.

He became fatigued, went under the surface and did not come back up.

Xujar was found around 6:45 p.m. and was pronounced dead by a Town of Highland Ambulance Paramedic.
