Man Accused Of Fatal Marriott Shooting Faces Additional Charges

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Roy A. Johnson, the man accused of killing the father of a Marist College student during a family visitation weekend, is facing more charges.

Dutchess County District Attorney William Grady announced Wednesday that Johnson was arraigned on a superseding indictment containing eight additional charges related to the Oct. 2 death of Paul Kutz, 53, of East Northport, Suffolk County.

The additional counts are second-degree attempted murder, for trying to kill a hotel employee in the lobby area of the Courtyard by Marriott; second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and an additional count of second-degree murder in the death of Kutz.

Johnson had previously been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Grady said the superseding indictment was a product of additional evidence developed after the initial grand jury presentation.

Johnson was again sent to jail without bail. The case was adjourned to Jan. 20.

Johnson faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted on the charges, according to the district attorney’s office.

Kutz was shot and killed during a disturbance at Courtyard by Marriott on South Road, otherwise known as Route 9, in Poughkeepsie Oct. 2. The father of three sons was attending the family weekend celebration for one of his sons who attends Marist.

Besides Johnson, Devin Taylor, 26, was also arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.
