Man Accused Of Fatal Shooting To Be Arraigned After Extradition

NEWBURGH, NY — A man who had fled to North Carolina was arrested after being accused of a fatal shooting Sept. 29 in the City of Newburgh.

City of Newburgh Police Commissioner José A. Gomérez said Monday Lamont Williams, 29, was taken into custody in relation to the killing of Daquan Corbett, 29, of Newburgh, and the shooting of a 5-year-old boy.

Williams was tracked to North Carolina and was taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service Regional Task Force.

Gomérez said his police department sends a clear message with the arrest of Williams that when you commit violence in Newburgh you will be found and brought to justice.

Williams will be arraigned upon his extradition to New York.

The 5-year-old sustained injuries from the gunfire that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Authorities said the shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sept. 29 on Washington Street.

Arriving officers found two victims: a 5-year-old child who had been riding his bicycle and had been shot in the leg and Corbett who had been shot multiple times.

Both were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where Corbett died of his injuries. The child was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.
