Man Points Loaded Handgun At Family: PD

The Ulster County resident is facing a felony weapon possession charge, in addition to two misdemeanors.

BEACON, NY — An Ulster County man was accused of pointing a gun at a family in Beacon Wednesday.

The City of Beacon Police Department said, shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a 911 call was received about a domestic disturbance between a man and woman on Fishkill Avenue.

A responding officer found Aaron Thompson, 26, of Ellenville, walking and yelling in the roadway.

When the officer approached him, he said Thompson drew a loaded, unregistered, 9mm handgun from his pocket.

He didn't comply with the officer's instructions and began moving toward a parked car.

Police said the officer, acting in a manner consistent his training, also drew his own handgun and moved toward cover.

The officer continued giving Thompson multiple commands until he put his gun down and came out from behind the car.

Thompson was then taken into custody with further incident.

An investigation found that he had pointed the loaded handgun at a family, including a child, according to authorities.

Thompson was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and second-degree menacing and endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors.

He is being held in the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.
