Poughkeepsie City Administrator To Assume Mayor's Job In January

The city administrator will finish state senator-elect Rob Rolison's second term.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — With Mayor Rob Rolison becoming the senator-elect for the 39th Senate District, the city of Poughkeepsie has turned to City Administrator Marc Nelson to take over leading the city.

According to the city’s Charter, the city administrator takes over in the event the current mayor resigns, which Rolison will do in January.

Nelson will finish Rolison’s second term in office, which will be completed at the end of 2023.

An election for mayor will be held in November 2023, and whoever wins will be sworn in at the beginning of 2024.

Rolison said the city’s administration team — especially Nelson — deserves thanks for getting the city back on its feet.

“I will vacate the mayor’s position knowing full well the city is in tremendously capable hands with Marc Nelson at the helm,” he said. “I look forward to continuing my work with Marc and the city staff as I represent the city and the rest of my district in the state Senate.”

Nelson said he appreciates Rolison’s confidence in him to assume the duties of mayor once he resigns.

“I look forward to the opportunity as mayor to build on the progress made since Mayor Rolison took office in 2016,” he said, “and to continuing to lead an extraordinary team of dedicated public servants who make up our city workforce.”
