Staff Member Accused Of Physically Abusing Resident At Behavioral Health Center: NYSP

The 49-year-old was charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, police said.

RED HOOK, NY — A Dutchess County man is accused of mistreating a vulnerable resident of a Hudson Valley care facility.

New York State Police say that on Monday, the Rhinebeck Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) received a report about accusations of physical abuse by an employee of Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, in the town of Red Hook.

An investigation found that 49-year-old Samuel I. Ezechukwu, of Red Hook, struck a resident in the back and held the resident's head down while transporting facility residents, according to state police.

As a result of the investigation, Ezechukwu was arrested on Tuesday and charged with felony first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Rhinebeck Court on October 8.
