10 Injured In Explosion, Fire In Wappingers Falls

Officials said five first responders were also injured, most from smoke inhalation.

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY — There were no fatalities when a massive explosive destroyed a four-family house at 4 Brick Row in the village of Wappingers Falls Thursday afternoon.

The fire and explosion were caused by a gas line that was struck. A contractor for Central Hudson was doing routine maintenance on gas mains and service lines on Mill Street when a 3/4-inch service line was struck.

Fire officials said, at a news conference at the scene, that there were 10 victims injured in the explosion and fire that happened around 12:15 p.m. Five first responders were injured.

Some injuries were critical, officials said.

Three of the injured — one child and two adults — were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. All others went by ambulance to local hospitals.

Electricity and natural gas service were cut to the area around 1:30 p.m.

Police, fire and emergency medical agencies from around Dutchess County came to the scene, along with the crews from Central Hudson.

Anyone displaced by the fire and explosion can go to the Knights of Columbus Hall where Red Cross representatives will assist them.

Town of Wappinger Councilman William Beale said more information will be provided through a news release.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement about the incident:

As the situation develops, I urge all New Yorkers to follow the direction of law enforcement and other first responders working to keep the community safe. I join all New Yorkers in praying for the Village of Wappingers Falls.

State Senator Rob Rolison, R-Poughkeepsie, said the events in Wappingers Falls were heartbreaking.

“Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the fire and resulting devastation,” he said. “While on the scene today I observed once again the selfless courage of our brave first responders as they worked to save lives and comfort victims.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart; please continue to keep the victims in your prayers,” Rolison said.
