NEWBURGH, NY — A local man accused of shooting a couple in the feet after a July 2024 argument has pleaded guilty to a weapon charge.

Jason Brown, 33, of Newburgh, entered the plea on April 23 in Orange County Court to one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Brown is expected to be sentenced on July 8 to 12 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler called Brown’s conduct “as senseless as it was violent.”

“The use of illegally possessed firearms to settle petty disputes can and does cause irreversible harm,” Hoovler said.

The shooting happened on July 31, 2024 around 12:30 p.m. A man and woman were arguing when Brown and another male walked by the couple and started arguing with the man, according to the district attorney’s office.

Brown and his companion left, but Brown returned within minutes and shot the couple, hitting them both in the feet, prosecutors said.

Brown fled the scene and discarded the gun and clothing, prosecutors said. The Non-Fatal Shooting Taskforce, composed of representatives from multiple law enforcement agencies, conducted an investigation and executed a search warrant at Brown’s apartment. Investigators recovered ammunition that was the same kind found in the firearm and at the scene of the shooting, according to the district attorney’s office.
