Ulster Man Accused Setting Fire To Camper, Stealing ATV, Cash

Police said the kitchen of a camper had been damaged by fire.

SAUGERTIES, NY — A report of a burglary led to accusations of arson as well for a Saugerties man.

The New York State Police said, around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 19, troopers were sent to a home on Cauterskill Road in the town of Catskill for a report of a burglary.

When troopers got there, they found a camper on the property with the door open. They entered and saw that the kitchen had been damaged by fire.

The owners of the property said that $400 and an all-terrain vehicle were stolen.

An investigation led troopers to a home on Fawn Road in Saugerties where they found John J. Shultis, 41, of Saugerties.

While being interview, troopers said they learned he broke into the camper, stole the ATV and the money and cause the fire.

Shultis was arrested Tuesday and charged with third-degree grand larceny, second-degree burglary and third-degree arson, all felonies.

He was arraigned in the Town of Catskill Court and sent to the Greene County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, $100,000 bond or $100,000 partial bond.
