NYPD Arrests 11 In NYC Protest Over Stephon Clark Shooting
Protesters marched from Columbus Circle to Times Square on Wednesday night.
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Eleven people were arrested Wednesday night during a protest in Times Square, an NYPD spokeswoman said. Protesters flooded Midtown Manhattan streets in protest of the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark by police in Sacramento, California.
One of the people arrested in Wednesday night's protest is Hawk Newsome, an activist with Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, according to the group. Black Lives Matter of Greater New York posted a photo of Newsome on its Facebook page Thursday with the caption "Free Hawk." The group is not affiliated with the national Black Lives Matter movement.
An NYPD spokeswoman could not confirm the identity of any of the people arrested Thursday. The spokeswoman also could not provide information on what crimes protesters have been charged with.

Protesters gathered in Columbus Circle on Wednesday night to protest the shooting of Stephon Clark. After a rally in Columbus Circle, protesters marched down the street to Times Square.
Clark, 23, was fatally shot by two Sacramento police officers on March 18 in his own backyard. Officers responded to Clark's backyard after receiving calls that a black man was vandalizing cars in the area, according to California officials.

The officers said Clark advanced toward them in a threatening manner and appeared to be holding a gun. Officers shot 20 rounds at Clark, who was actually holding a cellphone. California's Department of Justice announced Tuesday it will investigate the shooting.
