SHOREHAM, NY – More than 100 students at Shoreham-Wading River High School are quarantining for two weeks after three students who all attended a "weekend social gathering" tested positive for coronavirus, officials said.

The high school was closed Thursday and Friday. It's unclear if it will reopen next week.

A total of 125 students along with 11 staff members at the school are now under quarantine, Superintendent Gerard Poole said in a letter to parents.

Officials did not release details on the weekend social gathering, but there were at least two huge parties in the area last weekend.

On the night of Oct. 23 in Riverhead, there was a party with 300 guests and a DJ, police said. The host of that party was issued a field appearance ticket and charged with violating public health law for having a non-essential gathering.

A day later in Farmingville, there were between 200 and 300 people at a house party that included underage drinking, police said. A resident at the home was charged with second-degree criminal nuisance and violating Suffolk County's social host law.
