96-Apartment Complex Approved In Middle Island After 15 Years
Scalamander Cove will be a market-rate apartment complex on Middle Country Road, approved by Brookhaven Town this month.

MIDDLE ISLAND, NY—An apartment complex that's been planned for 15 years is finally coming to Middle Island. The Town of Brookhaven planning board approved the newest changes to the plans for Scalamander Cove on Nov. 8.
The project would construct 96 one and two-bedroom apartments at the intersection of Rocky Point and Middle Country roads. The apartments will be market rate-priced and be built on a lot with two vacant buildings, behind an existing Shell gas station.
The Middle Island Civic Association supported the project once the most recent amendments were incorporated: storm water management, the restoration of a wetland area and traffic mitigation. The development was first proposed in 2006.

Scalamander Development is owned by Sam Glass, who renovated the Aqualina Inn in Montauk and developed a luxury apartment building in Farmingdale.
There will be eight buildings on the site, and 6.8 acres will be preserved as wetlands.

"This project is starkly different from Renaissance Village. This will be a market-rate project that will feature high-end materials including Hardie Board siding and granite countertops. As required by the Town, the project will include approximately 13 affordable units," the civic association explains.
