Rocky Point Middle Schoolers Thank Vets

Students draft more than 700 letters of appreciation

As a token of appreciation for their service and sacrifices made, Rocky Point Middle School students drafted more than 700 letters to veterans living in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

The project, which was spearheaded by seventh-grade teacher John Mauceri, involved students in grades 6-8 and their social studies teachers. The original letters noted how the veterans were appreciated and treasured for their years of service to the country and for protecting the nation’s freedoms.

Each resident at the home received approximately two letters just before Veterans Day. The project held a special connection for Mauceri, as his father, an engineer and cook during the Korean War, is a resident at that home.
