Snow, Rain, 50 MPH Winds, 5-Degree Wind Chills This Weekend On LI

The first day of spring is just nine days away, but it will feel nothing like it this weekend.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A wind advisory has been issued for Long Island for Saturday with a winter storm on the way.

Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are likely, the National Weather Service says. The wind advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to midnight.

In addition to the wind, rain will changeover to snow by Saturday afternoon before ending. At least a coating of snow is expected for most areas.

As temperatures drop below freezing by late afternoon into the evening, refreezing is possible on some surfaces, creating the potential for hazardous travel, the weather service says.

The wind could cause some power outages across the island. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicles.

Sunday will be dry, but way too cold. Gusty winds will drop wind chill temperatures into the single digits during the morning.

The full forecast:

Friday Night- Rain, mainly after 4am. Low around 42. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday- Rain before 1pm, then snow. The rain could be heavy at times. Temperature rising to near 45 by 8am, then falling to around 27 during the remainder of the day. Wind chill values between 10 and 20. Windy, with a light and variable wind becoming northwest 25 to 30 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Saturday Night- A 30 percent chance of snow before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 20. Wind chill values between 5 and 10. Windy, with a west wind 21 to 29 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. Breezy, with a southwest wind 16 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph.

Sunday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 29. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph.

Monday- Sunny, with a high near 50.

Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Tuesday- Partly sunny, with a high near 54.
