MINEOLA, NY — Two Mineola students have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Katherine Ahn and Alvin Tsai, both of Mineola High School, were one of about 34,000 students nationwide to receive a Letter of Commendation in recognition of outstanding academic promise, officials said.
According to the National Merit Scholarship Program's website, Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, but many become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Ahn and Tsai earned their acknowledgments through their performances on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of the 1.5 million entrants to the program, they were among the 50,000 top-scorers. That puts them in the top 3 percent of test-takers, according to officials.
