Drexel Avenue Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Westbury Union Free School District recently celebrated Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with lessons taught across the District focused on Dr. King’s lasting legacy. At Drexel Avenue Elementary School, scholars learned about Dr. King’s vast contributions to American society through art.

“The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream of a more just society,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tahira DuPree Chase. “Each year, we take a few days to educate our scholars in pre-K-12 about how Dr. King peacefully challenged the status quo, helping to usher in a new era promoting civil rights, economic justice and education. We also talk about other leaders of the movement, recalling the countless other women and men whose contributions helped push our country toward equality for all. And finally, we talk about the ongoing movement, acknowledging that we’ve come a long way, but there is still progress to be made.”

In celebration of Dr. King, Drexel Avenue scholars participated in the New York State Education Department’s Dr. King student art and essay exhibit. All submissions to the exhibit honored Dr. King through reflections on his Six Principles and Steps of Nonviolence. Districts across the state participated, with ongoing themes in the artwork including faith, peace, love, justice and hope.
