Heat Advisory Issued For Mineola; Temps In The 90s Expected

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Mineola. It remains in effect until Friday evening.

MINEOLA, NY — Parts of Long Island — including Mineola — are under a heat advisory Friday as temperatures swell into the 90s.

The National Weather Service issues a heat advisory when the heat index, or "feels-like" temperature, is expected to reach 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days — or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

This heat advisory applies to all of Long Island, with the exception of northwest Suffolk County, forecasters say. It will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.

The extreme heat affects the body's ability to regulate its internal temperature, which can be dangerous if left untreated. Illnesses associated with extreme heat include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Officials say they are particularly concerned for children, seniors, homeless individuals, and animals.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat illness should immediately get into a cool, shady area to lower their body temperature. For severe heat illness, call 911.
