MINEOLA, NY — For the third year, Mineola Middle School students headed to Albany to become senators and assembly members, writing and debating legislation. Seven members of the school's Speech & Debate Team took part in the New York Youth & Government (YAG) Conference, designed to allow students to learn about the democratic process.

At the three-day event, the students present and debate two bills they authored. The middle schoolers decided New York needs two new pieces of legislation: banning gas-powered leaf blowers by 2025 and making security doors for lockdowns mandatory.

Michael Perro was elected youth governor and will begin his "term" at the 2023 conference.
