MINEOLA, NY — For the first time ever, two Mineola sisters are representing their school district in girls' varsity swimming.

Eighth-grader Leah Anzalone and seventh-grader Brooke Anzalone are participating on a combined team of districts — including Carle Place, Locust Valley, and Mineola. Officials say they are the only Mineola students on the team and that it's the first time the district has participated in a girls' varsity swim program.

"It is really exciting to start a new team in Mineola," Leah, a Mineola High School student, told Patch. "All of the swimmers from the different schools are really nice. I am hoping that one day our Mineola team is as big as the track team and we have our own pool."

Younger sister Brooke, who attends Mineola Middle School, says it's amazing to be part of this program and hopes that more swimmers from Mineola will compete on the team in the future.

In a statement, the Mineola Union Free School District said it "is #MineolaProud of the Anzalone sisters and looks forward to how they pave the way for future Mineola swimmers."
