Troopers ID Driver in Fatal Roslyn Crash

The driver, from Texas, mistakenly entered the parkway from the LIE on Sunday, police say.

New York State Troopers say a tractor-trailer driver from Texas died in a crash that occurred on the Northern State Parkway Sunday afternoon.

State troopers said they received a report of the crash on the eastbound side of the parkway near Exit 30 by I.U. Willets Road at about 4:30 p.m.

The operator of the tractor-trailer mistakenly entered the parkway from the Long Island Expressway, and as he approached the bridge at I.U Willets Road, he tried to stop to avoid striking the bridge, authorities said.

The driver, Javier Tapia, age 53, from McAllen, Texas, was killed when the metal beams he was hauling penetrated the tractor cab upon his sudden stop. The vehicle did not strike the bridge, police said.

Eastbound Northern State Parkway was closed at Exit 28, Willis Avenue to Exit 31, Glen Cove Road after the accident. The Long Island Expressway’s eastbound Exit 38 by the Meadowbrook Parkway was closed as well, according to Nassau Police.

No other injuries were reported.
