WATCH: LI Hospital Appears In Doc To Spread Word Of Nephrology Nursing

"We see them more than we see our own family," said Faith Lynch, senior director of dialysis operations at NYU Langone Hospital in Mineola.

MINEOLA, NY — A new documentary brings viewers inside the world of treating dialysis patients. In "I Want to Live," available on YouTube, nephrology nurses are showcased for their compassion with patients.

Faith Lynch, senior director of dialysis operations at NYU Langone Hospital — Long Island in Mineola is featured in the film.

She's been a nephrology nurse for her entire 19-year career, but it wasn't her first choice.

"This is what I was offered," Lynch told Patch. "They touch on it very minimally in nursing school."

But, in due time, she fell in love with her duties.

"I feel like it's my life's work now to make sure that everybody else knows that it's there," she said.

While the many nurses work with dialysis patients, there is also handling transplant nursing, a nephrology office practice or other responsibilities.

"It's really a broad term for a lot of different areas underneath," Lynch said.

The documentary, which is produced by the American Nephrology Nurses Association, came about "because nobody knows what we do," she said.

The nurse/patient relationship, Lynch said, is unique among kidney patients.

"We see our patients three to four times a week, four hours at a clip," she said. "We see them more than we see our own family. It's definitely very rewarding."

It was equally as rewarding for Lynch and her staff to show off their skills in the 36-minute movie.

"It was really, really cool. Everyone was so happy with the outcome," she said.

Lynch cherishes the time with her patients and her nursing colleagues.

"I am so very fortunate to work with them every day and I'm just so happy that they had a really good time showcasing what they do best," Lynch said.
