MONTAUK, NY — East Hampton Town officials took steps recently to ensure that the Montauk summer season, a typically busy time for business owners, visitors and residents alike, runs smoothly.

Town officials met with the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and members of the business community to discuss permitting, enforcement, compliance, town codes, and other concerns.

The meeting was held at the Montauk Firehouse on April 5 and was organized in advance of the busy summer season to open lines of communication and provide information to business owners so that they can better navigate the permitting process and operate within the parameters of the town code, officials explained.

Town board members, as well as members of town departments including planning, fire prevention, ordinance enforcement, and building, and police attended the gathering, hosted by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce.

"We have found over the past few years that direct discussions with business owners both prior to
and during the peak business season are helpful in clarifying both town regulations and the town’s
concerns as far as public safety, and making clear to businesses how our town codes will be
enforced," said East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc. "The discussions also help
business owners make advance plans that will enable them to have a safe, productive season and
to respond immediately to issues that may arise."

Close communication with the business community has enabled town officials to understand and respond to business owners’ issues and concerns, including making some modifications to the permitting process and instituting a pilot expanded outdoor dining program, he said.

East Hampton Town’s enforcement team members also meet weekly during the season to discuss
responses to issues at various businesses such as overcrowding, noise, neighorhood disruptions,
and other code violations, and seek to work cooperatively with businesses to resolve them.

In addition, representatives of the town’s planning department will be on hand at the Montauk
Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center at 742 Montauk Highway, Montauk, on April 19 from 1 p.m.
to 4 p.m. to answer questions and help with applications.
