Overnight 4-Alarm Mount Vernon Fire Displaces Dozens

Sweat pants and medium shirts for two 9-year-old boys are among the items being sought to help the victims who were lucky to escape.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — An overnight high-rise fire in Mount Vernon has left dozens without homes to return to.

Mount Vernon police are asking the public to avoid the area of West Lincoln Ave., between North 10th Ave. and Oak St., along with the streets that connect to the area, due to a fire at 145 West Sidney Ave. on Sunday morning.

The two-alarm fire started at the apartment building Saturday evening. The building has a convenience store on the ground floor and apartments on higher levels. No information on the cause of the fire has yet been released.

The Red Cross was on hand to help those displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported.

According to Jim Killoran, of the Fuller Center for Housing of Greater NYC, 33 people were displaced. Families who were displaced will be needing apartments in the Mount Vernon area.

The Fuller Center provided the fire victims who are in a shelter with socks, clothing, blankets and shirts. Killoran asked that anyone who can donate clothing or gift certificates text him at 914-406-3357.

  • size small women's clothing, 6.5 women's shoes
