Boy Charged With Hate Crime, Attacked Black Teen Inside NYC Station

The incident happened as the victim was making his way to school on Monday, according to reports.

NEW YORK CITY — A 16-year-old boy is facing hate-crime charges after he along with a group of other teens attacked a black teenager and shouted racial slurs at him inside a Brooklyn subway station on Monday, according to reports.

The incident happened as the victim was making his way to school around 8 a.m., according to reports from the New York Post and New York Daily News.

The victim was confronted by a group of teens inside the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station, who proceeded to call him N-word before punching and kicking the teenager. At one point, they also threw a banana at the victim, according to the reports.

On Wednesday, the 16-year-old suspect was charged with robbery and assault as a hate crime. A 14-year-old boy who was taken into custody was released without charges.

The attack was apparently captured on video and was posted to Instagram before it was taken down.

Police are searching for other suspects who were involved in the attack. It is not immediately known how many individuals are being sought.

The victim was treated at South Brooklyn Health for his injuries.
