  1. A lawsuit filed this week argues that the MTA denied discounted fares to disabled New Yorkers by categorically excluding them from the fair fares program, which does not apply to the Access-A-Ride program. The lawsuit states that 160,000 disabled New Yorkers who rely on Access-A-Ride would quality for discounted fares. (New York City Patch)
  2. A 33-year-old fire fighter is dead one day after battling a fire in The Rockaways, Queens. Jesse Gerhard had responded to the two-alarm fire that completely engulfed a three-story house, the FDNY said. (New York City Patch)
  3. A group of Brooklyn rappers who made a video bragging about the money they had made inadvertently led to a 'gang bust' according to federal prosecutors, who contended that the group had stolen the identity of other residents to keep their federal unemployment benefits. (New York City patch)
  4. Mayor Eric Adams' preliminary city budget proposal cuts funding to the city's composting program, which is available to communities on an optional basis. In response, a state senator introduced a bill to not only keep the program–but to make it universal for all New York City residential buildings. Organic food scraps, which can be composted, account for 30% of the city's waste. (amNY)
  5. A Tweet sent out by the NYPD detailing the stash officers had taken during a shoplifting bust in The Bronx backfired, when New Yorkers took a look at what the contents stolen were. The bust was almost entirely made up of diapers, soap, and cough medicine, which some contended are essential items that shouldn't be seized. Shoplifting is up 26% in Manhattan in the first weeks of 2022. (New York City Patch)
