NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers have a simple philosophy for naming their babies: if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Or, at least that's what latest edition of New York City's top baby names indicates.

Emma and Liam yet again topped the list of most popular names for girls and boys, respectively, according to city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene data.

Liam has been the top name for boys since 2016, while Emma held the title since 2017, officials said.

"What makes our city special are the New Yorkers – big and small – who call the five boroughs home," said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan in a statement.

"So welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah and all the other newborns to New York. Our city and world are better for your presence in the new year and beyond."

The annual top baby names ranking actually reflects birth certificate records from the previous year, meaning the latest entry lists the most popular names from 2022.

The city welcomed 99,459 babies in 2022, which is just a hair more than the previous year, records show.

What changed last year for girls' baby names is that Esther replaced Sofia off the top 10. Officials note, however, that if Sofia and Sophia counted as a single name it would be the top girl name.

For boys, Alexander kicked Benjamin off the list, officials said.
