- New York State's indoor mask mandate will end today, per Governor Kathy Hochul's announcement. The rule, which had been in place since December when the omicron variant began to surge, requires New Yorkers to either show proof of vaccination or wear a mask in all indoor spaces. Masks are still required on public transportation and in schools, although that could change in March. (New York City Patch)
- Many New Yorkers were shocked to see that their Con Edison utilities bill for the month of January had doubled–and in some case tripled–from what they had paid previously. No, There wasn't a mistake, and the company isn't overcharging according to a spokesperson who attributed the rise in prices to the high cost and limited supply of natural gas. (New York City Patch)
- New York City's outdoor dining program will most likely radically change in its permanent form, with physical 'sheds' being replaced by tables and umbrellas on city streets. That's the upshot of an almost nine-hour-long City Council hearing. (New York City Patch)
- Mayor Eric Adams would like to see a "dangerousness" clause added to New York State's bail reform laws, meaning that individuals would be assessed for bail based on their perceived risk to society. Critics slammed the proposal Wednesday, saying that it would lead to racial profiling. (New York City Patch)
- A New York City couple was charged with trying to launder $4.5 billion worth of bitcoin, in what has resulted in the "largest financial seizure in the Justice Department's history," according to the Deputy Attorney General. (New York City Patch)
