Listeria Fear Forces Trader Joe's Sushi Recall In NYC

NEW YORK CITY – Fears that Sushi and salads sold in New York stores including Trader Joe's and Walgreens could be contaminated with Listeria have caused a recall.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the bacteria could be in ready-to-eat sushi, salads and spring rolls that were sold on the East Coast and in the Midwest. They have sell by dates up to Dec. 6.

The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly among young children and the elderly, the FDA said. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages, the FDA said.

Trader Joe's said no illnesses had been reported but it advised anybody with the food to return it for a refund.

The food was produced by Fuji Food Products and was sold at 7 Eleven, Walgreens, Food Lion, Hannaford, Trader Joe’s, Giant Eagle Supermarkets, Porkys, Bozzutos, Supreme Lobster and Superior Foods.

"As responsible processors of safe, fresh food for nearly 30 years, we are addressing this problem vigorously and we apologize to those who are affected by it,"" said Fuji Food Products CEO Farrell Hirsch.

"We will restart operation only after we have eliminated the cause and the FDA certifies that our facility is once again free of possible contamination."
