Mount Sinai Beth Israel In Manhattan Officially Closes

A lawsuit seeking to block the closure of the hospital was dismissed by an appellate judge.

NEW YORK CITY — Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital, in the East Village, officially closed on Wednesday after serving the community for 135 years.

A lawsuit seeking to block the closure of the hospital was dismissed by an appellate judge, the New York Post reported.

On Wednesday morning, workers were seen removing signage from the hospital and notices were put up stating that the building was closed.

Mount Sinai’s CEO, Brendan Carr, announced the decision in a letter on Tuesday to hospital staff, according to the Post.

“To some, the closure of a building may seem like a natural part of doing business, but I know how much this building meant to so many of you,” the letter read.

Mount Sinai initially had plans to close since 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed that back into 2023.

Since September 2023, the hospital has stopped providing inpatient services with only its emergency department accepted walk-ins, according to reports.

The hospital has previously stated that they have been hemorrhaging around $100 million a year.

Mount Sinai announced it has opened an urgent care center on East 14th Street, two blocks away from the former hospital.

It’s unclear at this time what will happen to the building after the hospital's closure.
