NYC Congestion Pricing: $15 Tolls In Long-Awaited Proposal

Motorists entering Manhattan below 60th Street, take notice — here's how much congestion pricing could cost you.

NEW YORK CITY — Congestion pricing likely will cost motorists $15 to drive into Manhattan's most traffic-clogged streets

A long-awaited proposal officially released Thursday provides a picture of how much tolls could cost for vehicles entering the borough below 60th Street.

"We really made an effort to keep the base toll as low as we possibly could," said Carl Weisbrod, chair of the Traffic Mobility Review Board, which crafted the proposal.

The base toll will be $15 no more than once a day for passenger vehicles, according to the proposal.

Trucks should be charged $24 or $36, depending on their type, the proposal states.

And congestion toll rates will apply during the most congested times, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, according to the proposal. Toll rates will be 75 percent lower during nighttime hours, the proposal states.

"Only a few exemptions were made to keep the base toll low," Weisbrod said.

One major exemption will be for taxis and for-hire vehicles, which won't be tolled on a daily basis, the proposal states. Instead, there will be a $1.25 per-ride toll for taxis and a $2.50 per-ride toll for app-based rides.

The board sent the proposal Thursday to MTA board members, who will consider it during their Dec. 6 meeting.

Public hearing will unfold February 2024.
