  1. The city's trademark Summer Youth Employment Program will expand next year to provide, for the first time ever, 100,000 summer jobs. That's roughly on par with the number of applicants the program receives, according to the Mayor, and is equal to a $79 million investment. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams hopes the program can serve as a deterrent to gun violence. (New York City Patch)
  2. Permits were filed to demolish a Brooklyn detention center, which will be replaced with a new jail twice the original one's size. That's one step closer to realizing the city's plan to replace Rikers Island with four smaller 'borough based' jails in every borough except Staten Island. (New York City Patch)
  3. Mayor Eric Adams headed to Albany on Monday to negotiate with State lawmakers. High on his agenda was reversing some provisions of bail reform laws; he was unsuccessful, with the State Senate and Assembly leaders agreeing his proposed changes would lead to racial profiling. (Gothamist)
  4. Following the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Brooklyn rapper Jayquan McKenley, Mayor Adams asked social platforms to ban the music genre of "drill" rap, noting its 'depictions of violence.' His comments led to some backlash from those who likened them to attempts by politicians to censure rap music in the 1990s and 2000s. (New York City Patch)
  5. The killer of a Chinatown woman last weekend had stabbed his victim 40 times. The startling number was revealed at the perpetrator's arraignment for the killing of Christina Yuna Lee. He faces 25 years to life in prison. (New York City Patch)
