NYC Weather: Mid-Week Snow Possible As Bigger Storm Looms

Flakes could fall Thursday night ahead of a big winter storm that could batter the Northeast.

NEW YORK — Better stay bundled up. New Yorkers may have to brave some mid-week snow ahead of a larger storm that could batter the Northeast next weekend, forecasters say.

A chance of snow will loom over the city Thursday night and early Friday morning, possibly creating a slippery Friday commute, the National Weather Service forecast shows. It's uncertain how much snow could fall, but it may be followed by rain late Friday morning, the weather service says.

Even more flakes could come next weekend, as a winter storm may batter the entire Northeast U.S. with snow and ice, forecasters say.

The storm will first strike the West Coast on Thursday and then make its way across the country to the East Coast, according to Weather.com.

"There is the potential for widespread accumulating snow and ice along and north of where the low (pressure) tracks through parts of the Midwest and Northeast," the website says.

The potential for flakes will come after some more bitterly cold days. The temperature will reach a slightly-below-normal high near 36 degrees on a sunny Monday, but it will feel much more frigid with wind chill values between 15 and 25, the weather service says.

The city should warm up mid-week with the mercury hitting a high near 40 on Wednesday, accompanied by wind gusts as strong as 20 MPH, the forecast says.

But a chill will return on Thursday with a high near just 33 degrees, about five degrees below normal, according to the weather service.
